I pretty much grew up on the Pern series. It was a bit like losing a childhood friend when I heard she died. And really, just by reading her books she taught me so much about world building and writing in general. Dragonsong and Dragonsinger have been two of my favorite books since fifth grade, so it's hard to imagine life without her.
