Gen fics: the Underrated Awesome

Okay, so here's the thing.  Everyone apparently prefers pairing fics to gen fics.  What I don't get is why.  Because I read mostly Steve and Tony fics, and nemaline reads mostly Bruce and Tony fics.  Pairing fic always leaves something to be desired when we cross-rec.  But in long amnesia fic?  I can imply any pairing I damn well want to.  It's mostly Steve and Tony, granted, since those are the two characters I'm focusing on, but there's cuddles with Clint, hugs from Natasha, and I'm even throwing in some references to the Stark Spangled Banner ship.  Considering Bruce is the first person Tony's met in this place that he's actively liked, there's some Science Bro feels going on too.  I'm sure once I get to Thor, he'll have feels too.

Pairing fic?  Pfft.  Limiting.  I will subtext them all with cuddles and don't think I can't.  SUBTEXT ALL THE PAIRINGS.

That stated, I still haven't decided what to do with the pre-slash thing.  But that's at the end, and I'm only somewhere near the middle right now, so I'll worry about that later.  And worry about the gift exchange now.  -_-;;;  But that probably surprises no one.

Yep. It is true.

What I don't get is why.

Theory 1: Because, on the inside, everyone is a little old lady who likes to meddle in the affairs of others and be matchmakers.
Theory 2: We've been conditioned to see romance in everything.
Theory 3: Sex
Theory 4: All the above

Is Stark Spangled Banner the Tony/Steve/Bruce OT3 thing? Cause that's a clever pairing name. Why does Avengers fandom have the best pairing names?
